RE: All European Life Died In Auschwitz

Someone forwarded me an article today. I’m excerpting it below:

All European Life Died In Auschwitz

I walked down the street in Barcelona, and suddenly discovered a terrible truth – Europe died in Auschwitz. We killed six million Jews and replaced them with 20 million Muslims.

In Auschwitz we burned a culture, thought, creativity, talent. We destroyed the chosen people, truly chosen, because they produced great and wonderful people who changed the world. The contribution of this people is felt in all areas of life: science, art, international trade, and above all, as the conscience of the world. These are the people we burned.

And under the pretence of tolerance, and because we wanted to prove to ourselves that we were cured of the disease of racism, we opened our gates to 20 million Muslims, who brought us stupidity and ignorance, religious extremism and lack of tolerance, crime and poverty due to an unwillingness to work and support their families with pride.

They have turned our beautiful Spanish cities into the third world, drowning in filth and crime. Shut up in the apartments they receive free from the government, they plan the murder and destruction of their naïve hosts. And thus, in our misery, we have exchanged culture for fanatical hatred, creative skill for destructive skill, intelligence for backwardness and superstition.

We have exchanged the pursuit of peace of the Jews of Europe and their talent for hoping for a better future for their children, their determined clinging to life because life is holy, for those who pursue death, for people consumed by the desire for death for themselves and others, for our children and theirs.

What a terrible mistake was made by miserable Europe.

The following was my reply, which I publish here for all to see.

This is one of the most blatant and incendiary pieces of anti-Muslim propaganda I’ve ever read. I started reading it just after showering for the evening, and now I think I’ll need to get back in and scrub myself clean again. Let me dissect this piece of trash for you.

This is a piece of propaganda, originally published on the extremist website, and thereafter turned into one of these insidious email chain letters. It was never published in a European newspaper. Ever. Its author is not a journalist, may not even be European, and hasn’t had the guts to publish his real name on any other work of fiction editorial anywhere on the web.

Let’s get into the analysis of this garbage, shall we? I give you the words of our courageous, prosaic and entirely truthful author:

They have blown up our trains and turned our beautiful Spanish cities into the third world, drowning in filth and crime. Shut up in the apartments they receive free from the government, they plan the murder and destruction of their naive hosts. And thus, in our misery, we have exchanged culture for fanatical hatred, creative skill for destructive skill, intelligence for backwardness and superstition.

Now I give you a similar piece of work, published by another talented author from a few years back:

[They are] the product of the inbreeding of asocial, criminal, sick, degenerate and rejected elements of every possible race in the ancient world. [They are] neither a race nor a people nor a religion in our sense of those words. [They] possesses no homeland, but [lead] a rootless, parasitic life at the expense of the host peoples. [Their] current homeland is largely the criminal neighborhoods of the great cities of the world, [their] god is money, [their] policy is revolution and the destruction of the cultural treasures of mankind.

If you come to visit me in Washington, DC for a few days, I will take you to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (I regard it as a one of the most important things to see in DC). The first section of the museum tour takes you through the rise of Hitler and the birth of the Nazi propaganda machine. This article carries the same tone as piece after piece of Nazi propaganda you will read on the walls of that memorial. Reading them side-by-side, it is almost impossible to tell which of these quotes came from Nazi Alfred Rosenburg’s propaganda pamphlet “The Jew as a World Parasite,” and which is the more contemporary anti-Muslim propaganda so blithely poisoning the dark corners of the web.

This contemporary propaganda uses a favorite Nazi tactic, the wedge strategy. Simply put, the author focuses on an issue or imagery that is so emotionally charged that his readers will have difficulty thinking rationally about it, and then demands a resolution at whatever cost. The emotional stress of the issue allows you, the reader, to easily accept arguments, tactics and measures that would normally be considered unethical or immoral. The really nice thing about a wedge strategy is that once the author has used it to move you beyond rationality and reason, it will be easier and easier to do it again. Each time he can take you further and further down that dangerous path were the ends justify the means. It took Hitler about 15 years to turn Germany into a nation of murderers; in the current age of social media, anti-literacy and 140 character communication, I suspect the masses can be turned rather more quickly.

Yes, millions of beautiful, talented, decent people (Jews, Roma, Gays and others) died in the Holocaust. The reality is that they were murdered after their friends and neighbors were slowly and surely seduced into hating them through language and tactics just like those used in this “editorial”. Just in case you haven’t yet fully realized the scope of how you’ve been manipulated, let me use a bit of comparison and contrast to show just how deep down the rabbit hole you’ve gone. By the same logic (and math!) the author has used:

  1. Every Christian clergyman is a pedophile.
  2. Every citizen of Cambodia is an up-and-coming Pol Pot.
  3. Every child under the age of 5 is autistic.
  4. Every citizen of New York State is just as guilty as Timothy McVeigh.
  5. Every citizen of Mexico is a drug lord.
  6. The occupants of every Right-To-Life float should be regarded as potential clinic-bombers.
  7. Every black male should be put on probation peremptorily.

On the flip side of the coin, let’s look at the accomplishments of the Arab world that the author so conveniently forgot to mention – or maybe he just found it difficult to accept that so many of the victories of modern science are based on centuries-old discoveries by Arabs..

  1. Zero (the number, invented by Muhammad Bin Ahmad in 967 AD).
  2. Early Algebra – specifically fractions, the principle of errors and the geometrical method of solving quadratic equations.
  3. Trigonometry, separated from Astronomy by Nassereddine al-Tusi, and thus by extension –
  4. Non-Euclidian geometry.
  5. Early versions of the Scientific Method, and the concept of Peer Review.
  6. Crop rotation, cash cropping, and large-scale sugar refining.
  7. Early free-market economy and concepts of proto-capitalism that broadly influenced medieval Europe.
  8. Medicine – much of modern medical theory evolved from early Arabic study.
  9. Coffee, Soap Bars, Tooth Paste, Shampoo, Distilled Alcohol, Waterclocks, Windmills, Stained Glass, etc.

I didn’t even begin to scratch the surface of Arab achievements – major topics I didn’t even touch on include Architecture, Music and Literature. You could spend a lifetime studying their contributions and achievements in a single one of those areas. The author of this article mentions almost none of these achievements.

The reality is, this article has a single purpose: to instill in its readers a deep-seated fear and hatred of anything “Muslim”, thus making it easier to manipulate them into whatever atrocity the author deems necessary to control the Muslim menace. Don’t be a victim of someone else’s misguided fear and ignorance. End the cycle now – send this garbage to your deleted items, where it can mingle with the rest of the worthless digital refuse of human idiocy.

Credo, Part II: Why I’m not religious.

I believe in God the Father, Maker of Heaven and Earth,
And in Jesus, his only son, born of the virgin birth.
I believe he was crucified and descended into Hell,
And on the third day Jesus rose again, He’s alive and all is well.

I can’t tell you how many times I heard, sang and whistled that song as a child. Sometimes it still reappears in my brain, and I’ll hum a few bars before I realize it. That doesn’t really bother me as much as it used to; the latent guilt is gone. Now I just feel a bit of cognitive dissonance over singing the creed of something I don’t believe.

My unbelief – my rejection of Christianity – seems to give people more pause than what I do believe now. I’m going to try to address my rejection of Christianity up front, in order to get that out of the way so that we can focus on what I do believe. Let’s start where I started, when I first gave this question consideration.

A while back I told a friend from my Christian College that I was an Agnostic, and that furthermore, I believed Evolution best explained the origins of life on earth. My friend’s immediate response was that I’d decided to believe in Evolution instead of Creation because I wanted to believe that it was OK to be gay. I responded defensively, assuring him that he was incorrect, but afterward I spent a great deal of time pondering why I’d become an Agnostic.

Credo, Part I.

I was not offended by Nate’s message: I accept that he sent it because he cares about me. I wasn’t prepared to respond. In order to rectify that, I’m going to start the process of codifying what I believe.

Not too long ago, I received an email from my cousin Nate. A giant document was attached to the email, with a note asking me not to be offended at the contents. Basically, Nate spent almost 10 pages rebutting the argument that Christians can be gay, and arguing that homosexuality is simply another form of selfishness and self-worship. Of course, the ultimate message was the same one whose validity I rejected long ago: conform or burn.

I was not offended by Nate’s message: I accept that he sent it because he cares about me, and believes that I am damning myself by my actions. Frankly, if he didn’t take the time to send the message, he’d be a hypocrite. My hope is that, now that he’s sent the message and I have acknowledged it, we can carry on as friends regardless of our disagreement. I fully expect the occasional gentle reminder, but will be prepared with my response: I know that you ask because you care, but I don’t believe you are correct, and politely decline.

Now we get to the point of this post: the exchange with Nate has stalled because I wasn’t prepared to respond. I have a lot of very general ideas about what I believe, but since I’m not following a religion, not much of that is codified or delineated in a clear, communicable fashion. In order to rectify that, I’m going to start the process of codifying what I believe. I’m going to do it here, publicly (and probably slowly), because I appreciate feedback on what I believe.

I intend to codify my beliefs in a somewhat linear manner, beginning with the beginning (origins), moving on to human ethics and morality, and ending by topically addressing issues like gay marriage, government, abortion, the death penalty and so on. A fair warning: I reserve the right to retcon. If I discover inconsistencies, I may edit a previous post (I promise to use a change log, if I do so).

Nate, I’m sorry, but you’ll have to bear with me for some time before you really get my response. Hopefully, it’ll be enlightening & stimulating – or at least entertaining.

Dear Mr. President.

My letter to the President RE: his “fierce advocacy”. I ask him to support an immediate repeal of ENDA and DADT.

Dear Mr. President:

On the campaign trail, you promised the LGBT community that you would be a “fierce advocate” for our human rights. We believed we’d found a hero that would champion our cause, and we cast our support behind you and the Democratic Party on an unprecedented scale.

Mr. President, you have not lived up to your promise. Your advocacy thus far could be described as perfunctory. A former Bush Administration lawyer, Ted Olson, has been a far more “fierce” advocate for LGBT rights than anyone in your administration. That is, quite simply, disgraceful.

Mr. President, stay the discharge of LGBT service members under DADT, and support a full and immediate repeal of the policy. Demand the immediate passage of ENDA. Anything less than this is a betrayal of your promise, and a further illustration that the “Politics of Yesterday” are your politics.

A Letter to Amtrak Media Relations

A Letter to Amtrak Media Relations.

Dear Amtrak Marketing Team:

I just wanted to drop you a note and let you know that the LGBT community is aware that you’re facing some pressure because of your recent advertising campaign targeting LGBT’s. We appreciate your recognition and the advertizing dollars you are spending with LGBT-friendly media. We encourage you not to bow to pressure from intolerant sources, and to maintain your campaign.

On a personal note, I frequently use Amtrak for work. I enjoy the convenience and comfort of Acela Express Business Class, and the low-key environment of rail travel in general. Keep up the good work!
