Whatcha gonna do, United Airlines?

United, as long as you’ve got your head down there, you might as well kiss your ass goodbye.

So these two cuties are United Airlines Gold Club Members. They arrived at the Denver Airport and went to the United Lounge, a perk they’re entitled to as Gold members. The United staff at the lounge first ignored them, then taunted them. Finally, the United Manager called them “faggots” and threatened to have them removed from the airport.

I paraphrase my earlier tweet:

United, as long as you’ve got your head down there, you might as well kiss your ass goodbye.

Hate crimes, arson, and words that aren’t worth reclaiming.

LGBT individuals compose 26% of the nation’s arson victims; for a group that composes less than 10% of the population, 26% is an astronomically significant bias.

Burning to death is pretty low on the list of ways I’d like to die. It might rank above some of the more terrible diseases, but I’d rather freeze, drown, get hit by a car, be shot, fall or bleed out – given the choice. Unfortunately, burning to death is likely one of the deaths for which I’m at higher risk.

As it turns out, LGBT individuals compose 26% of the nation’s arson victims – something that won’t have surprised you if you keep an eye on LGBT news. At least three gay men have been victims of arson in the last two weeks. For a group that composes less than 10% of the population, 26% is an astronomically significant bias.

In his article for Huffington Posts’ Gay Voices section, Phillip M. Miner postulates an explanation:

The derogatory language used against gay men is steeped in flames: flamboyant, flaming, flamer, fag, faggot. All common. All involve combustion.. ..Many criminologists believe that hatred is the most common motive for arson. Hate makes sense. It fits with another common characteristic of LGBT homicide: overkill..

Some elements of the gay community have tried to reclaim the word “fag”. As someone who has had instruction in etymology, that idea never even occurred to me until I saw it in action. To me, the words “fag” and “faggot” are not just a statement of distaste or disgust – they are a veiled threat.

Next time you use or hear the word “fag,” remember that it’s not a derogatory term – it is a statement that something or someone deserves to burn. By using the word, you’re contributing to the chance that someday, some asshole is going to light a gay man on fire. By letting people get by with using it, you are tacitly approving of threats to burn someone like me. I hope that’s not something you are comfortable doing.
