Prop. 8 upheld. Who is next in line?

Men of the Pink Triangle

Hitler's other victims: the Men of the Pink Triangle

The California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8 today, in a 6-1 ruling. I don’t think the Mormons, Christians, Catholics or other fundies have yet realized just what a dangerous precedent this ruling has set when viewed in the light of the Court’s original decision declaring that LGBT people had a right to marriage. Today, by a nearly unanimous decision, the California Supreme Court has inscribed in the bedrock of Precedent that a simple majority vote may strip a people group of fundamental rights.

I call your attention to my favorite quote from Mrs. Coretta Scott King:

Homophobia is like racism and antisemitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood. This sets the stage for further repression and violence that spread all too easily to victimize the next minority group.

Who will be next? Can the barely-majority CA Caucasian population pass an amendment declaring that Latinos no longer have the right to own property? In the not-so-distant future, perhaps we’ll see the passage of amendments prohibiting speech denigrating religion, leaving thousands of victims of pedophilia without recourse in the crimes committed against them. Perhaps the religious right will stick with the easy targets, and outlaw all forms of PDA between non-hetero couples…

I know most people who read this are simply going to pass my thoughts off as “another angry rant by another angry queer.”
Folks, I am not ranting, and truthfully, I’m not angry. I’m scared. History has taught us lessons about allowing the gradual erosion of human rights. There’s a museum in DC about the result of such an erosion: the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

I recently watched Milk, and it was haunting to see the same issues still not resolved 30 years later. When will we learn to respect one another and see difference as a blessing not a threat?

Amy, it comforts me to know that people like you, Nathaniel, Matt & Jenne are out there – people that grew up in Christian homes, and are still able to see the need for diversity and equality. You’re probably Christianity’s last, greatest hope.
