Mexico is having a seriously bad week. First comes word of a possibly pandemic strain of Swine Flu that has migrated to humans, then today they have a 5.6 earthquake that shakes the entire southwest of the country.
According to CNN, “Hundreds more cases [of Swine Flu] are suspected, especially in Mexico, where as many as 103 deaths are thought to have been caused by the virus, the country’s health minister said. More than 2,000 cases have been reported but not confirmed in the country.” On Monday, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed worry, stating “We are concerned that in Mexico, most of those who died were young and healthy adults.” The Flu usually has higher fatality rates among the elderly and children, so that’s legitimately scary.
Today’s earthquake struck about 50 miles Acapulco, near the town of Chilpancingo. Preliminary assessments are reporting little to know damage, but apparently that hasn’t prevented Mexicans from wondering if the Apocalypse is just around the corner (either that or the main stream media really wants people scared).
Like I said. Rough week.
Hang tight, Mexico.
