Coretta on Americablog

I twittered this, but I wanted to post about it, as well. John Aravosis at AmericaBlog just posted a definitive guide to Coretta Scott King’s thoughts and opinions on Homophobia and the LGBT struggle for equal rights. I think the most powerful, thoughtful quote was this one:

“Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood,” King stated. “This sets the stage for further repression and violence that spread all too easily to victimize the next minority group.”

This is our struggle. This is why it is worth fighting. When a group of people stands up to fight for their civil rights, they are fighting for the civil rights of every other minority by proxy. We are simply asking to be treated with as much dignity and respect as the majority.
